Our Healthy Christmas Tips

Brush regularly, but gently
Brushing too hard can wear down your enamel and damage your gums. Use a soft-bristled brush and gentle, circular motions to keep your teeth clean without causing harm.

Use fluoride to fight cavities
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay and is found in most toothpastes and mouthwashes. It strengthens enamel and keeps your teeth resilient during the festive season’s sweet temptations.

Floss daily
Flossing removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth — areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Make it part of your daily routine to keep your gums and teeth in great shape.

Avoid smoking
Smoking not only increases the risk of gum disease, but it also stains your teeth and tongue — and contributes to persistent bad breath. Ditch the habit for the sake of your smile and health.

Limit snacking between meals
It’s easy to graze non-stop over Christmas and Boxing Day, but frequent snacking increases acid exposure. Choose tooth-friendly options like fresh fruit, veggies, cheese, and low-sugar yoghurt — and keep sipping on water throughout the day.

Be mindful of Christmas treats
Some holiday favourites are worse for your teeth than you think. Dried fruits in Christmas pudding are high in sugar and stick to teeth, while candy canes deliver a sugary, acidic hit that lasts. Swap them for softer treats like milk chocolate (a Freddo frog is a festive win!) — they melt easily and don’t cling to enamel.

Watch your drinks
Champagne, soft drinks, and wine are high in sugar and acid, which can erode enamel and cause staining. Balance things out with water between glasses, and finish with cheese or nuts to stimulate saliva and help protect your teeth.

Wait before brushing
After acidic foods or drinks, enamel can temporarily soften. Brushing straight away may do more harm than good. Wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to protect your enamel and give your mouth time to recover.

Don't use your teeth as tools
Your teeth are for eating, speaking, and smiling — not opening bottles or cracking nuts. Save yourself an emergency dental visit by using the right tools, not your smile.

Most importantly, have a safe and happy Christmas.
